Full Name: Evelyn Couteau
Age: 53
Civilian or Special: Special
Brief Power Description: Conditioning/Truth Inducement
Conditioning: Conditioning is the ability to implant a suggestion or a thought into one’s mind and either make that person act upon it, or make that person think that the idea is their own. This power effectively allows its user to suggest or compel their subject to do an act that they might not ordinarily do. Depending on the strength of the individual’s willpower, they may choose to ignore the suggestion, or reject the thought that is trying to implant itself into their mind.
Limits: This is purely based on auditory sense. If a person is deaf, conditioning will not work on them. If the person Evelyn is trying to condition is in a loud area such as a bar or another place where her voice cannot be heard, the power is ineffective.
The power will not work on other people who have some sort of mind-based power (telepathy, telekinesis, etc.) simply because it would be like speaker feedback.
A person may be able to resist her conditioning based upon the strength of their willpower.
Truth Inducement: Evelyn also possesses the ability to force someone into telling the truth. This works in much the same way as conditioning, as she compels her subject’s mind to tell her the truth. Truth inducement is more or less based on the emotional connection she shares with someone. Being a news reporter, if she is researching a story and feels very emotionally-invested in her work, that emotion will translate into her interviews. The stronger the emotional connection she shares with her subject, the simpler it is for her to get the truth out of them.
Limits: Truth inducement is also based on auditory sensation. If an individual is incapable of hearing Evelyn’s voice for whatever reason when she is attempting to induce them into telling the truth, the power simply will not work.
Truth inducement will also not work on individuals who possess a mind-based power, because it would cause the power to backfire on her, and would probably be quite painful.
Depending on the strength of their resolve, an individual might be able to resist the compulsion to tell the truth.
If she feels no emotional connection to the person whom she is trying to get the truth out of, the power will not work.
This power can only be used on one person at a time. It will not work on an entire group of people.
Brief Description of Character: Because she is a news reporter, while on the job Evelyn must keep up a rather conservative appearance. She can generally be seen wearing knee-length skirts and long blouses. Evelyn prefers to dress in neutral colours that look sharp but not distracting. She has auburn-coloured hair, though it was dark brown up until she started dying it.
She is 1.57 m tall and looks a bit on the thin side, which she blames on her addiction to caffeine. Evelyn is the type of person who likes to know everything. As such, she is very open and conversational, and is generally easy to get along with; after all, she wouldn’t be a very good interviewer if she were anti-social. She likes to make people feel comfortable around her because it makes them easier to connect with.
Brief Description of History: Evelyn was born in Nice, France on 16 Nov. 60 years ago. Growing up, she had a very easy-going life, and enjoyed her childhood while it lasted.
When it came time to attend university, she wanted to attend film school out in the U.S. Instead, she wound up applying to Loyola University in New Orleans where she studied Marketing. She took an internship working at a local news station during one of her later semesters and found that she enjoyed being in front of the camera much more than she enjoyed crunching numbers. Also, people seemed to get along with her rather easily, and it was always easy for her to finagle her way around and get the truth out of tough interviewees.
After graduating, she moved to Bossier City to work for a start-up news station there in the mid-1970s. She met Vincent Couteau while interviewing Cornerstone Hospital’s Board of Trustees for a story on the misappropriation of hospital funding. Since then, she has gone on to work for CNN.
