Personality-
On the surface, Oscar is a slightly nervous, constantly buzzed, mumbling mess of a boy. And underneath the surface? Yeah, more or less the same.
He’s resourceful, good with problem-solving and is able to think “outside the box”, if you’ll excuse the cliché. A deep thinker, it’s not unusual to find him frantically tapping away at his laptop, writing up some new idea or theory.
A smart boy, Oscar has never been completely comfortable with his intelligence, fearing that others may resent him if he is too successful. Despite this, he works hard to maintain a fairly high grade average but occasionally struggles due to an unwillingness to ask for help.
Oscar is, for all accounts and purposes, a push-over. Very rarely will you see him standing up to someone and, as a result, he ends up taking a lot of abuse in silence. He prefers to avoid confrontation whenever possible. That’s not to say that he won’t speak up for something he believes in… it just means that he has to build himself up in order to do so.
Thoughtful and eloquent, it’s clear that, with more confidence, Oscar could do well in a position of authority, teacher maybe, or low-scale politician if he got really ambitious. Oscar is very loyal towards his mother and has been especially supportive since the ‘death’ of his grandmother.
Anxious and self-conscious, Oscar’s main goal is that of all ambitious youths; to succeed and be liked.

Abilities/Powers/Skills-
Oscar's primary power is photokinesis. Using his mind, he is able to control particles of light, both on an individual and large-scale basis. He can change their direction, appearance, formation, etc
Some of the basic things he will be able to do with this gift is change what colours objects appear to be, by filtering which parts of the light spectrum are reflected from it into the eye. He might bend beams of light around objects, creating illusions or rendering them seemingly invisible. He might even intensify beams of light, through stimulated emission, to create lasers to use as a form of attack.
Unfortunately, Oscar’s power has only just manifested so for the time being he can only direct light, torch-like, with a pointed finger. With practice he will begin to discover more of the above and eventually, through his bioluminescence, will be able to generate and manipulate his own light.
Oscar’s secondary power is that of bioluminescence. In a nutshell, this means that, since discovering his ability Oscar’s body absorbs light particles during periods of bright lighting and exudes a dim glow. It is only, at the moment, really noticeable at night but will develop to be able to brighten and dim at his will. His body stores it, but as a result he glows. With experience he will learn how to channel the light and be able to use it for a ‘flashbang’ effect, expelling a sudden burst of bright light from his hands, eyes and mouth.
Limits-
Inexperience is a fundamental limit on Oscar’s power as, in its current state, Oscar is practically powerless unless there is a strong source of light nearby. This means that, by dusk, Oscar is rendered powerless due to lack of light.
Another problem with his powers as they stand is that, due to the fact that he glows, Oscar is very easily spotted, especially in the dark. Any hopes of stealth are ruined.
Whilst he cannot be blinded by great flashes of light, they can still irritate his eyes and leave him temporarily dazed. His power is almost solely dependent on his ability to see. If this was impeded in anyway, Oscar would be vulnerable, unable to use his powers as they are so heavily based on his ability to see and manipulate light.
Equally, whilst Oscar stores light, this stored light slowly dissipates through his constant glow so, if Oscar were kept out of range of any strong sources of light, for about two days as that’s how long it takes for all of his light to be expended (when it’s not recharged), he would be sufficiently weakened/powerless.
Appearance-
Oscar stands at a slender five foot, ten inches. He is thin, but, after some work, is starting to develop a little more muscle, though it's not as prominent as he would like. He has a runner’s body, clearly one for flight, over fight.
His sharp, often smiling, features and almost white-blonde hair serve to make his ice-blue eyes truly stand out, especially against his pale, freckle-less skin.
He has a tiny scar on his chin that he seems to have had forever. His right ear was pierced, two years ago, in an act of rebellion that he very quickly regretted. It’s healed up, but a scar remains as proof of its brief existence.
Alignment- Neutral... for the moment.
Team Affiliation- Not yet.
Birthplace- New York City
Mother- Aideen O'Grady, 36, supermarket checkout clerk/hotel cleaner, civilian.
Father- Leo Lomax, 39, newspaper journalist, civilian.
Grandmother- Vanessa O'Grady, 58, transient, special - typhokinetic.
History-
Born to Aideen O’Grady, at the start of the 90s, Oscar was a calming influence on the young Irish-American, who’d been heading towards trouble after partying for half of the previous decade. The sense of responsibility having a child gave Aideen ended her wild-child days, giving her a reason to stay at home and save money.
Though, without her reckless care-free attitude, Oscar might not have even been conceived. Aideen met his father at a party. She didn’t even know his surname when the pair of them hopped into bed and, well, you can imagine the rest. Nine months later, out popped Oscar.
Oscar’s childhood, or his early years at least, were relatively stable. His father wasn’t around so Aideen’s mother helped to raise the child and, between the pair of them, they didn’t do a bad job of providing for him. He was happy and well-loved and that was all he needed.
Oscar’s grandmother, unbeknownst to either her daughter or her grandson, was a special. When the boy was ten, in the middle of the night, the Company broke into their apartment and abducted Nessa. Oscar hid under a bed and was able to avoid being detected but the shock was so much that he was unable to describe what had happened to his mother and the event has left him with a permanent fear of the dark/night.
Aideen repeatedly contacted the police but was, each time, ignored, dismissed or just not dealt with. Eventually, though she hated to accept it, she decided that her mother must have died. Oscar reacted rather badly to this but, despite perhaps knowing better, he came to accept it, though he did withdraw into himself for quite a while. Oscar continued to make good progress in school but there was a noticeable difference in his character, nothing drastic, but he was just quieter, less open. He’s not been quite the same since.
With her mother gone, their income was less and soon the bills started to pile up, especially with Oscar’s insistence that his room be lit through the night, and it started to get too much for Aideen. They struggled through but frequently late payments resulted in their power company cutting their power, leaving Oscar in the dark. The boy’s constant terrors and the stress of working two jobs started to take their toll on Oscar’s mother. Oscar continued to support his mother, taking over the majority of household chores from her.
A few weeks after his ability manifested, he received an invitation from Ark Industries to an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas. He accepted without hesitation, keen to meet others like him and learn more about the world of specials. On the final day of the trip, after a large banquet, Oscar was approached by one of the heads of Ark who informed him that they had decided to give him a home anywhere in the world. Not wanting to move away from his hometown, Oscar picked Manhattan and arrangements were soon made for Oscar and his mother to move into their new place. All the mortgage and bills have been paid which allowed Aideen to drop one of her jobs and spend more time at home with Oscar.
Anything else?- Not that I can think of.
Sample RP-
Oscar yawned, taking another sip of the third can of Red Bull that evening, as he leant away from his computer. The old computer chair creaked as he stretched back and he felt a satisfying click between his shoulder blades. A sleep-deprived smile dimly lit up his face and he returned to the game.
He’d been playing for about three hours straight now, and his eyes were starting to hurt but it was a sacrifice he was willing to make. Oscar had struggled with “bedtimes” for quite some time now. He had, slowly but surely, adapted to living on less sleep than most would, but it did take his toll. Caffeine was his main source of energy, providing that reliable kick when he needed it. Red Bull was his beverage of choice but he could be tempted by a warm double espresso on a cold winter morning.
“Ugh…” Perhaps it was time for bed. He blinked a long blink, his eyes heavy and resisting his command to open again. Standing, he took a look around the room. His curtains were closed, to avoid seeing the pitch black abyss that lurked outside; the pitch black abyss that everyone else called ‘night’.
Oscar had been afraid of the dark for as long as he could remember. In fact, he wasn’t sure he could even remember a time when he wasn’t going to sleep with the light on. He almost wished he could change it. It would certainly have made having a social life a lot easier.
“Hey, Oscar, do you wanna come to my sleepover?” “Want to go see that new horror movie, Oscar?” “A few of us are going camping down by the lake. Wanna come?” Oscar would sigh, and politely decline. “I’ve got to… cook, for my mom tonight. Sorry.” “I’ve got this essay to do… Sorry.” “I can’t. I promised I’d…” It didn’t matter what it was, he always made sure to have an excuse ready.
Another yawn. Yup, it was definitely time for bed. Leaning over the chair, he typed a quick farewell to his fellow gamers and signed out for the night. He turned on his feel and fell onto the bed, before promptly falling asleep.
