In Character (IC) stuff should happen IC.
Basically this means, that if you don’t like someone Out Of Character (OOC) or have had a disagreement OOC, then don’t bring it into Eclipse. Don’t have a personal vendetta against them, and use the karma system to show them that. It’s petty and at the end of the day, this is an rp. It should be fun. Once its stops being fun then people leave.
Some things to be weary off are using OOC information IC, Using your own personal motives to drive IC actions and also taking what is said IC personally. Sure sometimes these things are funny to use between online friends as an in joke, but using them with someone you don’t know, who may be offended, that may be stretching it a little. Just because you THINK you know someone from the internet, doesn’t mean that they won’t get offended.
- Using OOC information IC. An example of this is that you know a character is going to join a faction in the near future. BUT your character doesn’t know that. So you shouldn’t make a reference to it in the post. This is known as metagamming, using OOC info IC. Basically you can read all the threads on the board, and know what is going on, but YOUR CHARACTER doesn’t know everything that is going on.
- Using your own personal motives to drive IC actions. An example of this, is that you wish to join a faction. Just because you WANT to doesn’t necessarily mean that you can, so your character doesn’t go out seeking to join the faction. Another example is that a person calls you a rude name in the cbox, and you get offended, so IC you make it a mission for your charrie to destroy those charries. Not only is this godmoding, it is also uncalled for. If someone offends you OOC, then take it up with an admin, who will sort out the situation for the both of you. If you don’t like someone, the simple thing to do is just to not rp with them.
- Taking what is said IC personally. An example of this is that another character HATES your character. Just because this is the case, doesn’t mean that they hate you OOC. Its just rping peoples.
Another thing I have been noticing is OOC comments in IC threads. I think this is fine, as long as it’s done in a subtle way. ie, say you've posted, and at the end, in smaller writing and in italic you write an OOC message, that is cool, but to write an OOC message on its own in a thread is a frowned upon. Its like an extra post count, for pretty much nothing. Try and keep it all together, and try not to double post (in the roleplaying boards at least).
The most important rule is that you are not your character. Your character is a figment of your imagination and creativity, which just so happens to be in a world of other figments of imagination and creativity.
The best thing to do, is not have the same name as your character, this leads to attachment issues. Also when you refer to your charrie OOC, then refer to them as your charrie, ie, by their name. it sounds stupid, but just because your charrie is dating another, doesn’t mean you are dating that person in real life. Know the barrier, and keep it up.
