What are the odds? (Jason)

It was a bright sunny Thursday midday. Diantha was off work today, she had called in sick even when she was not. Luckily, there was little chance of anyone noticing. She was keeping to the part of town were her fellow colleagues rarely walked. She knew this because none of her colleagues was nerds like her. Therefore, figuring that she would get in trouble if she stayed home, she decided to go down to her local Nerd store, well, that was where she was heading. However, right now she was taking a small detour to the nearest grocery store. Having felt a certain hunger within her, she had figured that she would sate this hunger before embarking into the world of nerdiness.

She walked among the other costumers of the store, she was wearing a knee length light blue dress with a flowery pattern design upon and a black satchel hung over her right shoulder, though resting upon her left hip. She had long since changed her sandals to a pair of comfortable pair of black sneakers, that honestly did not really fit the dress, but she did not mind. Her shoes did instead; fit the piece of clothing she was wearing upon her legs. She had chosen to wear black leggings, and she thanked herself for making that decision, even though it was a decent 16 degrees Celsius outside she still felt that it was far too cold.

She was currently walking by the vegetables and other foods of biological origin’s aisle. It was surprisingly busy in this section of the store. I guess the whole health craze is still going strong. She thought to herself, she had never been a fan of living healthily, though her parents insisted on doing so, and since they were the ones putting the food on the table, she complied.

A woman walked right past her, or rather, she stormed past her with a screaming kid of no more than five years old and another one placed firmly in the children’s seat of a shopping cart. Diantha had been on her way to make a turn down another aisle when the woman stormed past her, she just barely dodged it. Unfortunately for her, and whoever stood right behind her, she, albeit gently, almost felt right into the person behind her. Quickly she regained control of herself once she noticed she had walked right into someone in her attempt to dodge the woman with the shopping cart. She turned around to look the person in the eye and said. “Oh, I apologize it wasn’t my intention to walk into you.” She was sincere in her words and intention. She honestly had not meant to walk into the person behind her.

This was a new sensation. Perhaps not strictly new in the sense of never having been experienced before, moreover it was a sensation that had somewhat been forgotten. That was, the sensation of going to the shop and doing some actual shopping.

Jason had grown as a person – in that, he had grown to the point of being a fairly successful, albeit lucrative and perhaps not all above-board businessman. Every aspect of his life was comfortable and he had people who would do give in to every one of his whims without so much as breaking a sweat. What Jason offered was something that was very much in high demand by specials and civilians alike.

When he first manifested and met that lovely woman in the alleyway all those years ago, Jason did not know what to do. He had no home, no friends and no sort of real future. Now, however, he had everything he could ever need and then some. The ability to manipulate somebody’s adrenaline production through the means of hormones had some remarkable side-effects. He could kill somebody without so much as blinking. He could put somebody to sleep and calm them to the point of complete serenity. He could augment – or dampen – any ability he chose.

And people were willing to pay for it.
He was, in his own right, an entrepreneur.
After all, if you were good at something then there was no sense in doing it for free.

So it could only make sense then, that when posed with the predicament of needing some food though having nothing to cook, Jason had a choice: order takeaway or get somebody to do some shopping. Picking up his cell phone, Jason called his business acquaintance.

“Oi, mate, get me some food.” Jason hissed down the phone and in response, he got a crackled groan,
“I can’t, Jason. I had plans for today.” Frederick replied.
“The fuck am I meant t’do then?”
“Go yourself.” And with that, the dial tone rang through Jason’s ears.

And that did not help things. With a loud huff, Jason hurled his phone at the wall.

Fucking prick, Jason thought to himself as he felt his mood suddenly start to boil. Frederick was, in essence, Jason’s right hand man. Through everything, Frederick was there, acting as Jason’s conscience. He was the moral behind Jason’s work. He was also a teleporter – an asset that Jason had come to find invaluable. Mixed with Jason’s ability, Frederick had been known to fold time as well as space – though this was temporary and had never been tested extensively. In return for Fredericks complete loyalty, Jason not only paid him but allowed him used of his ability whenever Frederick liked (within reason). So for Frederick to take a personal day? That was completely uncalled for.

But, needless to say, there was no point having his day spoiled over one person. Jason let out a long breath and pulled on some relatively simple clothes; a blue silken shirt, black bowtie, bowlers hat and matching black coat and trousers. Simple.

Making his way downstairs, Jason picked at the little bit of sleep that had burrowed into the corner of his eye. He hadn’t been up long and despised leaving his apartment so he avoided it where possible. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible.

The shop he was going to go into wasn’t far; it was a small health-store that had a lot of really nice foods. Frederick usually stopped by to cook for Jason. So, surely, it wouldn’t go amiss if he went? He patted down the coat and realized he had no money on him. No matter.

Jason could think of a way to pay.

With a groggy, almost zombie-like groan, Jason inhaled and his pupils dilated; his power reaching throughout his body and surging the pure ectacy of adrenaline through his body. Who needed coffee when you had this ability?

Feeling somewhat more awake, Jason entered the store and approached the vegetables and no sooner had he done that, had somebody decided to walk into him, causing him to stumble back slightly.

Okay, now that pissed him off. He could excuse Frederick for wanting a day off, but this? This insolence? That was inexcusable.

“Oh, I apologize it wasn’t my intention to walk into you.” She spoke with a soft tone, trying to apologize.

Jason adjusted his hat and sighed, a short smirk on his lips, “I am sure it wasn’t.” He ran his tongue over his lips, his grin almost nefarious now, “The fact ov the matter is, though, you fuckin’ walked int’me.” Jason took a step toward the person and his eyes glazed over with false sympathy, “So I should say sorry.”

Jason ran the back of his forefinger across her cheek, the crème-coloured musk pulsing from his finger and flowing deep into her body. His power making its way to do its thing. He was hoping to give her a little bit of excitement; perhaps a minor heart palpitation. Who knew what’d happen.

“But I’m not.”

He said, stepping back to watch his work.

Of all the days to walk into some creeper, she had to pick this day. She had tried to be apologetic, a feat that most people would not see her ever apologizing. This man had, and she felt regret the moment she realized that the victim in this case was a creep. Another thing she noted almost immediately was that his face looked familiar, but given how much she worked and how many faces she saw each day; it would not be out of the question that she had seen him before.

The way he ran his tongue over his lips, almost like a super villain, told her that she was going to regret this for the rest of her life. It took all her self-control not to sigh loudly enough for the man to hear. She could not quite put her finger on why it mattered though; she figured it would be more trouble than what it was worth. Then the man began to speak for the second time, this time his accent became clearer to her. Great, a bloody brit/Irish… something… She internally groaned at the prospect of the wannabe thug.

Her thoughts were quickly lead away when the man took a step forward. She became eerily aware of her personal space and the sudden invasion of it. Then his finger moved across her cheek, and a sensation spread through her body. She felt her heartbeat quickening, something akin to a warmth spreading through her body. She usually felt like this when excited but what had caused that? There was nothing to be excited for and then it dawned upon her, the finger, the creepy British/Irish/Something accent. This person was evidently one of those evolved humans…

She took a step back as quickly as she could. She did not want to be close to him. “What… What did you do?” The fact that he was an evolved human did not particularly surprise her. She had heard enough about them from everywhere to figure that there was a large probability of meeting one. What affected her the most was whatever he did to her, she needed to know, not because she wanted it to happen again, but because it felt like she had been violated. She could not put it into words, but her personal space and even the very privacy of her physical being had been invaded by whatever it was he had done.

Her heart kept beating as if some drug was fueling it. Her eyes revealed what she felt, it was not the excitement that he had tried to instill in her, but the fear that he might try again. She was becoming painfully aware of her surroundings now, people were not noticing the commotion or they were ignoring it. Either way, if this Evolved Human decided to do something worse, she was almost certain she would not be able to fight back or run quickly enough to get away.
