Winter had taken hold of the small town, and its sights and sounds could be had all around. This was a place of happiness, of simplicity. A glance around, at the manner of dress, technology, and building, and so forth, would peg it as being in the American northeast, in the nineteenth century. The visitors were dressed for it too, in heavy coats and the fashions of the time. Children laughed as they played in the snow, watched with careful eyes by their parents and caretakers; but the adults laughed as well, and danced, and had lively conversations with one another. They were friendly, as well; they waved at the strangers as they passed through the town, on foot, their progress slow and easy.
Overhead, sprinklings of stars twinkled brightly against a clear night sky, with a moon that seemed to shine just as brightly. There was a cold breeze, however, which made the adults pull their coat collars up close, and bundle up their children too. Sledges pulled along the street past the walking strangers, their little bells ringing merrily, almost a song to the ear. The walk was pleasant enough, and they had each other for company, even if they did not know each other. Their unfamiliarity with the town would be common ground.
They were on their way to a wedding. The wedding of a friend, or a colleague, or a relative - it didn't matter. The celebration was all around them, and it seemed to heighten as they drew closer to the church, the sledges providing fitting sound for the way, and a trail of laughing and cheering children sending them on.
