I see rping as like a soap opera. I have plans in place for my character all the time, when one finishes, the next one starts up. This helps to ‘evolve’ your character as a person. There are three main ways to do this.
Character Development
Every post I do has a reason, I don’t like ‘open threads’, every thread I do has a purpose. One of them is character development. To develop the character I use situations. For example, when he first became a Company Agent it was because he wanted to be ‘fixed’ and the Company promised him that. But as he has gone on, he has become more and more a ‘Company Man’. Each thread I have done towards this has been given a reason. Pacy’s partner getting killed made him more comfortable with what he does, saving the world from ‘bad’ people. Being made Co-Admin of the Company has made him even more comfortable, as much as he doesn’t want it, he knows that it is where he belongs.
Character Plot
Again I have an idea of where Pacy is going. He first joined the Company to be ‘fixed’ which he hasn’t been yet, he hasn’t even started to be ‘fixed’ but he will. Other plots lines are him finding out about his photographic reflexes. But I mention things about this at times, keeping the plot going, and also keeping people in the know about it
Board Plot
The simplest, I use Pacy to move the board plot forward, like him being in charge gives him a reason to be in the plot. This bit also mixes in pieces of the other two above.
What can you do about this?
Always have aplan in place of how you want your character to evolve. So when you finish one ‘plot’ point you can move onto the next one. Maybe PM people to find out if they would like to help, or if you join a ‘open thread’ PM the person to tell them how you want it to happen, or if they are alright with certain things happening. I think forward planning always helps, it makes you a better rper, because you know where all your threads are going, and it also helps threads have a purpose, and not go ‘dead’.
