Sparrow (dressed as Korin, a video game character she does live action for, in an oversexified kimono, because these are video games): So here I'm with Niri and Jenna, two dedicated Comic-Con fans. So ladies, could you tell me, what got you interested in these sorts of conventions?
Jen (dressed as Yoko Littner - tinyurl.com/jenyoko ): That'd be my girlfriend's fault. *cuddles Niri* This year's my first time here, doing this sort of thing.
Niri: (dressed as Akira Kazama - tinyurl.com/niriakira1 / tinyurl.com/niriakira2 ): My first Comic-Con was last year. I got persuaded to come along by a friend in the family and to give cosplaying a try.
Sparrow: That's pretty awesome, especially since you seem to have put a lot of time into your costumes! They look great! What do you guys think of Comic-Con so far?
Niri: It's been better than last year so far. I decided to get more involved in events this time around; do things that I didn't get to do. Like the Cosplay Chess match. That was pretty fun.
Jen: I've mostly been trying to take it all in; the size and scale of it, y'know? It was weird at first - having people stop me for pictures - but it makes us all feel like celebrities for a weekend! The heat inside the hall is probably one of the few drawbacks, though. It's mostly why I decided on wearing this.
Sparrow: *laughs* Yeah, it is pretty toasty in here. Lots of people. But you seem to be adapting well, Jen. And Niri, it's pretty awesome that you've done some of the stuff! Do you have a favorite so far?
Niri: Aside from the chess match? Well, uh...
Jen: *smirks* There's the café thing..?
Niri: Somehow, I knew you'd mention that. *grins* Yeah, they decided to do a second trial run of a Japanese-style maid café this year. Because they didn't have an established group in to staff it, they opened it up to volunteers and I managed to get myself a spot. It's almost like a weekend-long theatrical show, where we're all acting out personas while giving the customers a fun time. And it's all for charity, too.
Sparrow: That sounds amazing! I hope a lot of people check it out. I'll definitely send anyone I can your way. No pressure! *grins* What about you, Jen? Anything you really like about Comic-Con so far?
Jen: I like how people cosplaying a common theme enjoy getting together and making their own fun; the whole "community" thing. I'm gonna be part of a huge Pokémon group and do a big group photoshoot, for example. I love the different stands and panels inside, too. With all of the different things you're able to buy and see.
Sparrow: Definitely, definitely. What panels might you all see? Planning to sit in on anything?
Niri: Well, it mostly depends on whether I have enough free time to catch one! *laughs*
Jen: We've already been to see the RWBY premiere. Though I do want to catch a couple of panels. Maybe a few screenings later one. They're showing all sorts of fun trailers and previews.
Sparrow: So I've heard. I hope you enjoy them! What about shopping and signings and such? Done anything f the like yet, or planning to?
Jen: I've been buying a few gifts. I found a stall selling anime plush dolls, so I got a Yoko one for me and a Vash one for a friend of ours.
Niri: I've had a couple of things signed so far. I had an artist draw and colour a picture of me.
Jen: Was it that guy who took a photo of you first and basically turned it into an anime freeze frame?
Niri: Yeah, him! It was too interesting to pass up.
Jen: Inaki and I got one from there, too! He's really talented.
Sparrow: Interesting! There is some really neat stuff around here. So, is there anything you would recommend to anyone who wants to get involved in cosplaying or conventions, or any other thoughts on your mind?
Niri: Cosplaying can potentially be an expensive hobby, especially for the complex costumes. When you're starting out, either go for something simple - a lot of characters have casual outfits - or find someone who will either help you out or make it for you. It's great fun going there on your own but, if you have any like-minded friends, try to rope them into it as well. But, most of all, have fun!
