A SPREADING SICKNESS
A hospital in New Orleans, now abandoned.
By now, everyone knows about the latest tragedy that has befallen us. A unique and deadly strain of cholera has the nation in its grips. Tens of thousands of people have fallen ill, and hundreds, maybe soon to be thousands, of those people have died or will die. There is some solace in the fact that this death toll is nothing compared to the lives lost in some of the former disasters - April Fourth, the attack on UNLV, Phoenix, and the lasting horrific effects of those who survived those events as well as Costa Verde and Hell, Arizona and the geomagnetic storm over Atlanta. But still, hundreds and thousands of deaths are hundreds and thousands too many.
Efforts to combat the disease are underway. The Red Cross and other organizations have been treating the ill anywhere they could, but some cities and towns have been so widely affected by it that they have been cut off from aid, quarantined, basically left to suffer and die. The Jung Facility has started to step in in those places, leaving the treatment of less dangerous locales to those organizations that won't enter the quarantined areas. According to reports from Los Angeles, the Facility has been extremely effective in treating the sick and comforting the loved ones as they wait for news.
There are other reports that suggest that a few parties are looking into the cause of the strain, and others that are working on a more effective treatment or cure. It may surprise some people to know that the cited parties are related to the Kilvayne Corporation. The megacorporation is well-respected in the pharmaceutical industry, so there is a very good chance that they will come up with something. Dr. Lucius Kilvayne himself has rarely been seen, but his brother Lex seems to have taken charge of the company's efforts. One of their recent acquisitions, Constant Design and Development, founded and run by Dr. Kilvayne's friend Gabriel Constant, is leading the investigation into the cause of the odd and unfamiliar cholera strain. Constant has had extensive experience in dealing with this kind of matter in Africa and other places where cholera is or has been prevalent.
However, the biggest surprise, if true, is that another Kilvayne acquisition, Ark Industries, may also be involved in finding a cure. The rumor seems to have been started by someone in Los Angeles, so it might very well be a deliberate untruth spread to make the company look good. Oddly because lately Ark's PR team has been grabbing at every opportunity to get some good press, no statement has been offered by Ark one way or the other. Ark's Chief of Public Affairs, Fallon Daugherty, has only stated that she is unable to discuss the matter at this time. Ark CEO Christian Moynahan, who is usually accessible to the press, has not been seen or heard from since the epidemic began. Speculation ranges from the possibility that he is also sick or that he is indeed involved in treating the disease.
If these rumors are true, why wouldn't the Kilvayne Corporation make better use of the good press that their work would offer them? Why is it that of its three main figureheads - Kilvayne, Constant, and Moynahan - only one (Constant) has been seen recently? Should we be suspicious of this, or hopeful? Or should we let rumors be rumors? Someone must be working on some kind of treatment somewhere; it's simply odd that no one has come forward as doing so.
As an aside, for everyone who has been affected by this epidemic, I wish you all well and will hope for the best for each of you.
