Personality-
At first glance Derek appears another more as a pothead. He’s easily amused and gets happy over the littlest thing. Derek also appears to have a hard time paying attention to anything due to his Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. He is kind to people he meet, especially girls. However this is a false persona that Derek puts up to deceive others into a false sense of awareness. Derek is actually a very cunning and intelligent, though somewhat lazy, person. He gets his kicks from deceiving and manipulating other people.
Derek is one of those people who look at the bigger picture. He is able to form well developed and thorough plans because of his attention to details. He is also a very prideful person, deeming himself to be better than others. This is especially noted in fights. When fighting, Derek often mocks his opponents with childish banter and small talk before attacking. Derek gives nicknames to those he has displeasure towards. When it comes to adults, Derek mocks them by calling them Mister followed by an unflattering nickname.
Derek’s ego has also given him a short fuse. Though he doesn’t let small things like nicknames, being blown off, or being yelled at get to him, he usually snaps when someone takes a shot at his pride. During these moments he usually gets angry and often loses control of his powers before recomposing himself. However, it’s at these points where Derek becomes “tired of playing around” and usually will finish the job quickly and ruthlessly.

Abilities/Powers/Skills-
Umbrakinesis: Derek has the psychic ability to manipulate darkness and shadows by deactivating photon molecules. This process allows for Derek to stretch, bend, shape, and even strengthen his shadow. He can make his shadow bend around corners and even have it rise off of objects and create extra appendages. His shadow can take on various shapes and forms from sharp spears to multiple tendrils. With this ability Derek can surround foes in a dome of darkness and turn deactivated photons into solid materials similar to those with photokinesis. In point, Derek can bind someone with strands of shadows, shoot bolts of solid darkness at foes, or even strangle someone with his powers.
Derek’s powers are fixed around his shadow as the point of origin. However, his shadow is able to “assimilate” other shadows and use them to increase the strength of the shadows. For example, if he were to stretch his shadow into the shadow that was cast from an overhanging bridge, that shadow would also become a part of his shadow and Derek would be able to attack from greater distance and with more tendrils. In addition, because his ability is initially the ability to turn off or repulse photons, he can counter abilities that use photons or light molecules and end up trapping that person in darkness.
Like Photokinesis, Derek can create solid materials from his shadow. These materials can be as sharp as blades and as durable as steel. In opposite to that, Derek can make his shadow as comfortable or as bouncy as a cushion to break his fall. Furthermore, with enough practice Derek can travel through shadows by repulsing photons to create a dark pathway to another close proximity.
Shadow Mimicry: Not essentially an ability Derek possesses, but rather a power his shadow itself possesses. When his shadows comes in contact and “assimilates” the shadow of a human being with superhuman abilities, his shadow and then temporarily mimics that person’s superhuman ability and apply it to itself. For example, if his shadow were to come into contact with the shadow of someone with super speed, Derek’s shadows would be able to move faster than normal and if they were to come into contact with someone with super strength, his shadow would be much more powerful.
Limits-
Umbrakinesis: Though Umbrakinesis is the ability to control shadows and darkness, it is still the science of manipulating light particles into their deactivated forms. True darkness is the absence of light particles, such as spaces were photons have been repulsed away. Because of that, Derek’s shadow will not appear without any light source. In other words if he were to be put in a cell room with no windows or light fixtures and be completely surrounded in darkness, Derek would be utterly powerless.
Also, the strength and how much he can do with his ability are limited to how large his shadow is. For example, if his shadow is the size of a pea he wouldn’t be able to do anything. Because light is used to manipulate shadows, a flash bomb can usually be used against him to shrink his shadow and his control over them. Derek cannot control every shadow in a room unless his shadow touches it. In other words, unless he can stretch his own shadow far enough to touch your shadow, there is little chance of your shadow coming up and killing you.
Derek can create solid materials from his shadow, but unlike Photokinetics, they materials he create cannot appear out of nowhere. Rather, they are extra materials formed out of his own shadow and can only go as far as his shadow can go. For example, he cannot form spears out of darkness, but he can form spear like tendrils. The same can be said that he cannot form a sword or a hammer, but can form sword like tendrils or a block of shadow. How big and how many weapons he can form also depends on how big his shadow it. If his shadow is large and massive, he can create thousands of vine-like whips or one giant “shadow-hammer”, but if his shadow is small he can only create one sword like whip.
Shadow Mimicry: This ability, as mentioned above, only allows for Derek’s shadow to gain similar, but not exact, qualities of people with superhuman abilities. In order for this to happen, Derek’s shadow must stretch and “assimilate” with the other Special’s shadow while that Special is using their power. This ability only applies to Specials with abilities like super strength, super speed, super accuracy, super reflexes, and other super enhanced human abilities. His shadow cannot copy properties from elemental users or psychic users. This ability does not give Derek any of these abilities and is simply a way for his shadow to be more powerful. Because his shadow is only mimicking these abilities, his shadow will not retain those enhanced strengths once his foe escapes.
Appearance-
Derek is a young man with shaggy brown hair that usually stays above his ears and hangs over his eyes. His hair does this nice trick where in certain lighting; it would appear to go from brown to a light ginger color. He was almond shaped and colored eyes that always seem to appear glassy or unfocused due to his drug abuse. Derek also has bags under his eyes from the drugs always, but besides those, you can never tell he is tired because he constantly has a smile on his face. Derek stands at 5’8” with a lanky built, although he does have some muscle in his chest and legs, but if he were to jump up and down shirtless, he’s jiggle. One major noticeable thing about Derek is that he has many old and faded scars across his body. He has four nine inch scars across his back and two horizontal scars up his left forearm. In addition, Derek has a tattoo on his right arm that is shaped like the lizard Nazca Line etched in green. If there is one facial expression Derek is known for, it’s his goofy ear-to-ear smile which people deem his “pothead” look.
However, Derek’s “pothead” appearance is only an outer appearance Derek puts up to fool people. When he’s in a more serious mood, he cleans himself up and Derek can look quite handsome with a young baby face and bright, but mischievous eyes. He actually combs his hair out of his eyes, allow his “victims” to look into his eyes. When angered, Derek’s right eye will twitch and his face will twist into a scowl with him baring his teeth.
On a casual day Derek dresses in raggedy clothing that appears too big on him. He is constantly seen wearing a big camouflage jacket on top of a grey hoodie. In addition, Derek has a necklace made of a wasp inside amber hanging around his neck by a leather string. Derek’s clothing is mostly dirty and he usually will wear the same shirt or pants five times in a row before considering changing into something else. The only time he will change before that is if he’s got blood on his clothes. Derek does wear a suit and tie, but only when he’s got to go to meetings or when its deemed appropriate attire. However, his suit isn’t the best of them all. It is a faded, pale blue suit with a dirty red tie. Derek always wears the same scuffed and muddy brown boots where ever he goes and no matter what the situation. Finally, he carries an old fashioned barber shaver that connected to a copper chain that’s tied to his belt. The shaving blade is the only clean item he has one him with a skull and cross bones etched on the left side.

History-
Derek Perseus Whiteman is the illegitimate son of Danielle Whiteman and Dana Surprenant. Derek did not grow up wither either of his parents because Dana was simply one of seventeen year old Danielle Whiteman’s many one night stands. Danielle herself gave Derek up for adoption instead of raising him herself. For six years Derek was raised as one of the unwanted children of Saint Vincent Orphanage in Daytona, Florida. During those six years Derek was one of the known trouble makers. He would pull pranks on other kids, be rude to any adults that came in for adoptions, and was known to never listen to anyone. His rambunctious behavior often earned him a spanking or two from the sisters in charge of the orphanage, but that only fueled his reckless behavior.
At age six, Derek was sentence into the foster care after the nuns at Saint Vincent deemed him unfit to be in their care after he “accidentally” set fire to the gardener’s tool shed. Derek didn’t do that much better in the foster system. His first home was by an elderly Christian fanatic couple who returned him after he questioned their god and that if there was a god, why would he had made orphans. His second foster home was a little homier as he was taken in by young fashion designer named Brook Chambers. She was a very caring and patient woman who treated Derek more like a person rather than a “rotten little brat”. Derek managed to spend a whole year living with Brook and it was the best year of his life. However, Brook’s conniving and bitch of mother filed a complaint against Brook to the foster system. The woman claimed Brook was unfit to take care of children because of her occupation and the fact that Derek had fallen out of a window under Brook’s care. Though Derek had tried to defend Brook, though claiming falling out of the first level window wasn’t the best defense, he was still taken away and put back into the foster system. Before he left though, Brook gave him her amber necklace, something he’s kept to this very day.
For the next two years Derek was shuffled through four more foster homes after that. He made sure to make life for his next foster parents as miserable as possible until he was put back under Brook’s care. When Derek was nine years old he was put in his seventh and final foster home, the worst home he could possibly imagine. He was stuck in a home where the foster parents were these sickening sweet adults on the outside, but were complete bastard on the inside and to this day Derek refuses to even mention their first names, simply referring to them as the Greedy Robinsons. They simply used Derek for the foster checks and they did not deal with Derek’s behavior like his other foster family. Whenever he would misbehave, Derek would get a beating. His foster father seemed to take some kind of pleasure in using a belt to whip him on the back. Though Derek was exposed to several beatings, he only has four remaining scars on his back from those whippings.
After a year of living with the Robinsons, Derek contemplated running away when the Robinsons took on another foster child. This time it was a sixteen year old girl by the name of Temperance Lemoore. At first he thought she was a strange girl because she was always reading and talking about dinosaurs like they were living creatures. However, Temperance was the second person to show Derek any kindness. She did it in subtle ways like taking the blame for things Derek did and thereby taking the punishments that Derek himself would have. She would also read to him from her dinosaur book and sometimes even took the time out to help Derek read. She was actually the one to notice Derek’s dyslexia. Temperance made living with the Robinsons bearable and they lived with the Greedy Robinsons for the next two years. When Temperance was 18, she finally called social services on the Robinsons and the foster system took Derek away from them. Though he wanted to stay with Temperance, he couldn’t because she was too young to take care of anyone. Upset with the foster system always separating him with people he liked and putting him in with people he didn’t, Derek ran away at age twelve.
The streets were nowhere for a kid to grow up in. He spent most of his time stealing from vendors and sleeping underneath boxes. He spent an entire year doing that, but when Derek was thirteen his luck changed. Derek ended up impressing a gang in the Florida coast by stealing from a cop and effectively evading them. His small size and quick movements gave the gang leader some ideas and before he knew it, Derek was the youngest member of a Florida Mafia group. Then next four years were the best years of Derek’s life. Even though he knew none of them, the gang members treated him like one of their own, even teaching him how to defend himself. There were even other kids his age, but he was told never to talk to them unless they talked to him first. During those three years Derek got into using drugs, smoking weed and such. One interesting thing Derek noticed growing up in the gang was that some of the members had super powers like being able to move through solid walls and controlling water. Derek really started enjoying his time in the gang. However, Derek’s lucky never lasted long and before Derek knew it, he had been caught by the cops for possession of marijuana.
Derek spent three months in prison, during which time Derek discovered something interesting. While in his cell, and bored out of his mind, Derek decided to make some shadow puppets to entertain himself. He started with simple thinks like dogs and birds when he saw something odd. Even though he kept his hands still, his shadow was still moving. At first he thought it was a trick of the light, but on closer inspection, Derek noticed that his shadow was indeed moving on its own. His shadow formed shapes that were inhumanly possible for him to shape with his hands like boats, dragons, cars, even people. While most people would be disturbed by this, Derek was excited because it meant he’d be just like the others from his gang. However as luck would happen, as soon as Derek was released, he found out that a group called the Company had taken many members from the old gang and once again Derek was left on his own.
With only his shadow to keep him company, Derek decided to leave Florida. After pick pocketing and stealing from some spring breaking college students, Derek took a Greyhound and left the state. After obtaining a fake ID, Derek traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada. He made a small business as a drug dealer and he would occasionally go into a few casinos to gamble. With the money he “earned” Derek managed to rent a small apartment in Las Vegas. In addition, he spent his free time playing around with his powers. At age eighteen, Derek discovered not only could he make his shadow take on different shapes, but whenever his shadow touched another shadow, said shadow would also be affected by his powers and he’d be able to control that. Further experimentation allowed Derek to manipulate his shadow to the point where he’d be able to pull it off surfaces and form solid materials. This made it much easier for Derek to steal from others. However, after spending a year in Las Vegas, someone by the name of Dante came up to Derek. The man was also a Special and he showed interest in Derek’s abilities. Dante made an offer to Derek, if the boy worked for him, Dante give Derek something in return. However, Derek declined the offer, telling Dante he was satisfied with what he had right now. Dante kindly nodded, but told Derek the offer would still be open in the future.
The next day Derek left Las Vegas after he was caught selling weed and narrowly escaping the cops. Derek made his way back to Florida, but this time he stayed in Miami. There, he was reacquainted with Brook Chambers, who was able to recognize Derek because of the necklace she had given him. She invited him to stay with her, wanting to catch up with her former foster son. Derek spent the night at Brook’s place, learning how she was now a CEO of a fashion company and was doing very well for herself. While there, Derek found a book that had been written by his former foster sister Temperance Lemoore and he also found a new paper that told of his former gang was up to no good again. Derek was happy that the people who were kind to him were doing well, but he was upset his life wasn’t as great. Derek left Brook’s place the next day and started looking for an apartment. While at a coffee shop, Derek overheard something on the television that disturbed him. It was a report that explained that Brook Chambers had been killed by an angry worker named Danielle Whiteman.
Derek had been heart-broken to hear that, but he was more disturbed to find out that Brook’s killer had his last name. Fearing the worst, he returned to Saint Vincent and used his powers to get into the filing system. He discovered the name of his birth parents and his blood boiled. Angered that not only had his birth mother given him up, but killed one of the few people who were good to him, Derek plotted his revenge. He snuck over into the police department using his powers to hide himself and stood outside the holding cell belong to Danielle Whiteman. The fact that she didn’t recognize her own son pissed him off and for the first time ever, Derek used his power to kill someone. He used his shadow to strangle his biological mother and felt nothing as her body hit the floor. Still hiding in the shadows, Derek snuck out of the prison, but not before stopping by evidence and taking the barber knife used to kill Brook. Danielle Whiteman’s death had been deemed a suicide, but killing her was enough to satisfy him. He became angry that good people were being hurt by horrible people. He also felt disturbed at the fact that he killed someone and felt no remorse. Driven by his emotions, Derek slit his own wrist with a barber knife he had stolen and planned to just let his miserable life to end there. However, he was saved by the return of Dante, who healed Derek’s wound. At first Derek was upset that the man would try to interfere with his suicide, but then Dante told Derek something that shocked him. Dante offered bring Brook back to life if Derek worked for him. It was all the reason Derek needed to join Dante.
After joining Dante, Derek received a tattoo on his right arm in the shape of the lizard nazca line. The process to gain the tattoo was painful because Dante had simply touched Derek’s arm and created the tattoo. Dante explained that he had the ability to transmute at an atomic level, thus allowing him to turn some of Derek’s skin cells into the tattoo. Dante then began to explain to Derek his life’s goal, but in order to accomplish it he would need more people to help him. It would be Derek’s job to locate and recruit six more members for their little group. Derek smirked and replied he’d be happy to do it and Dante gave Derek the codename Pride.
When Derek was twenty-two years old and living in New York. He has spent the last four years traveling and looking for Specials. He was told not to approach anyone yet, but just to obverse them from the shadows and wait until the right moment. There were many noteworthy things Derek witnessed and done in his travels. He discovered and stole a copy of a list of captured Specials within the Company. He visited the Jung Facility and talked to a few possible candidates. After two years of working for Dante, Derek was finally told to officially recruit a new member who would be codenamed Wrath and given a placement in the government. Derek has also trained two strengthen his abilities and keeping his role as Dante’s right hand man. Recently Dante approached Derek and handed him a file on his biological father. After reading it and finding out he has half-siblings, Derek’s anger at how unfair the world is increased. He’s making it his person mission to make the lives of his siblings as miserable as his used to be.
At first, Derek was all about making his siblings’ lives miserable. But then he met his baby brother. Well, not literal baby, because Mike was only four years younger than Derek. He’ll admit, the kid had style and spunk and Derek gave him props for that. Derek didn’t realize it, but he was growing more attached to Mike. He didn’t want to, planning full well on taking away everything from the kid that Derek never got to have. He still hangs around Mike, occasionally stopping by the young male’s home, taking Mike on random road trips. He especially likes taking Mike to Vegas.
A year after Derek got into a relationship with a woman by the name of Brie Collins, Dante died. In his will he left everything to Derek and passed on the plans for the organization to Derek. Depressed, Derek broke up with Brie and moved back to Vegas, taking up residence in the casino that Dante owned. Derek now runs the underground ring for mafia members. He plans on bringing back the underground mafia that he had been raised in.

Derek hated wearing tuxes. They made him look old and goofy. He hated it even more when he had to comb his hair. His brown shags were stuck in this ridiculous Elvis looking hairdo that made him look even goofier. He wanted nothing more than to take his hands and ravage his hair until there were back in their untamed and disheveled look. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t do that. He had to look presentable for the meeting. Though Dante gave Derek the same respect as Derek gave him, the man was like a father scolding a child when it came to appearances. He had told the boy countless times that he needs to look presentable during meeting. He can look however he wanted while on his mission, but he was not to make Dante look foolish for sending a pothead as a representative.
“I’m not a pothead. I mean, yeah I’ll eat a special brownie now and then, but that doesn’t mean I’m a pothead.” Derek muttered to himself. There was at least one good thing about being deemed a pothead by his peers. He had the perfect cover. Not one would ever believe a lazy pothead would be a part of a more sinister plot. They would also never believe that said pothead would be able to kill anyone or to help start some of the recent disasters that have been happening around the globe. Sure, Dante had done most of the work like causing that dormant volcano to gush clouds of smoke, but Derek had done his fair share. He proudly remembered killing hundreds of birds and them making it seem as if their corpses had dropped out of the sky. It was a new personal best being able to cause that much ruckus without being caught. However, these were just small tasks compared to the full scale plot Dante had planned.
“Humans are so stupid. I can’t believe they even fell for those falling birds as a sign of the apocalypse. Still, whatever gets the job done right?” Derek said to himself as he looked himself in the mirror. He was wearing a pale, faded blue suit. Well it was his only suit so what else was he supposed to wear? He fixed his cuffs before picking up one of two ties. He could go for baby blue poke doted bow tie, just to make a statement, or he could go with the maroon tie. Though he would want nothing more than to walk into the meeting and give a big middle finger to those execs with his bowtie, he knew he had to go with the maroon tie. He had to show them he was serious. Derek started to put on his tie.
Behind him his TV played a new bulletin on the recent Registration Law. The anchor woman went into details over how the new law would help capture dangerous Specials and stop the monstrosity that they were. Her bias attitude toward Specials caused Derek to scowl. His shadow rippled in tune to his anger and a single tendril of darkness stretched out from his shadow and stabbed right into the center of the television set. The television sparked before it shut off. The tendril slowly receded and returned to Derek’s side. The young criminal fixed his jacket and exhaled. He slapped on a happy smile.
“Okay, time to go talk to Dante’s executives.” Derek smiled. He turned away from his mirror and started out the door for the meeting he would going to to see how well Dante’s executives were doing in the plan to crash Wall Street. Then it was off to Florida to go talk to Temperance about her pro-Specials book campaign. He was really looking for that meeting.
