John Daugherty
Full Name: John William Daugherty
Age: 53
Civilian or Special: Special
Currently Located: New York
Affiliated with: Villain
Celebrity Claim: Laurie, Hugh
Relation to You: Father
Appearance: John is tall and slender. He keeps his greying brown hair cut short and somewhat neat. His eyes are a dark, cloudy blue; his nose is narrow and his lips are thin. His style of dress tends toward casual, even in business settings. He has a deep voice that is completely devoid of any accent, though he can imitate accents well; it is impossible to tell where he is from based on his voice. Likewise, he is a difficult person to read, as he is a master at controlling his expressions.
Personality: John's best qualities are his charm and attentiveness, though he generally only uses those when he has something to gain. He is intelligent, focused, and self-motivated to the point of ruthlessness. He shows off shamelessly, cares little about how his actions affect others, and constantly looks for the "bottom line," the potential rewards or consequences of dealing with others. If he cannot profit from a deal- even something as simple as giving up a seat on a bus or returning a lost wallet- he isn't going to waste his time on it. He keeps himself closed off, refusing to show emotions, which he considers "liabilities." In short, John can be personable and considerate when he wants to be, but he only wants to be if there is a material benefit from doing so.
*Fallon's bio lists John as a civilian. Since then, I've changed her plot a bit and now John has powers.
Ability Detection: John can sense whether a person has superhuman abilities. His mind does a quick scan of the subject's physical and psychic makeup to see whether anything stands out. This tells him what kind of ability a person has, if any, and what kind of ability it is. He can also tell if someone is a special but has not manifested yet. However, he usually cannot tell exactly how someone's ability will work. This ability is not passive, and works on as many people as are within a ten-yard vicinity of John.
Ability Override: Additionally, using the same mental processes, John can temporarily keep an ability from being used. This is different from fully negating an ability in that he cannot simply block powers- the subject has to be actively using their ability in order for him to "override" it. He can only override one subject at a time, and the loss of their abilities only lasts up to two minutes.
John was born into a working class family in Bangor, Maine. His family had resided in the area for centuries, and had fought in every major American war since then, but had never quite risen above poor-laborer status. They were fine with that, though; the merits of the simple, quiet life were taught to and passed down through every generation, to John and his four siblings. As John grew up, however, he grew to dislike that ideology. He wasn't happy with his mediocre education and a future life of physical labor. He wanted to be wealthy- and he wanted to earn that wealth. He was highly intelligent and extremely driven, two qualities that would prove indispensable in achieving this goal.
After completing high school, John enrolled in a small college nearby, then transferred to Columbia University in New York. He quickly grew to love the city- its fast pace, its culture, and most of all, the possibilities for self-advancement it offered. But living in New York alone and with no money was not easy. John picked up a couple of jobs to help support himself and pay for his education. Juggling school and work was a balancing act, but the lessons it taught him would prove useful in the future.
John earned a degree in business management, and moved among a few different full-time jobs in that area before earning a middle management position at the small regional carrier Dominion Airlines. He stayed with Dominion for years, and the innovative ideas he presented regarding the airline's business strategies got him promotion after promotion- as well as considerable increases in salary and appealing benefits. His new status also got him the attention of beautiful, powerful women. He married Nadine Abney- mostly for reasons regarding image and convenience- and the couple had a daughter, Fallon. John found that he liked buying his wife and daughter the best of everything; having objects to spend his growing wealth on made him feel more accomplished and gave him opportunities to show off. This materialism cost his daughter dearly in terms of personality, and it kept the family distant from each other.
Meanwhile, Dominion Airlines had become a major carrier, thanks in large part to John's stewardship of the company; for that reason, in 2010, John was elevated to the position of chief operating officer, answering only to the CEO, who he would replace upon the CEO's imminent retirement. The job suited John almost perfectly, as he was able to put his strategic talents to work with little interference; the only downside was not being completely in charge, and that would change with his next promotion.
John has attained what he had set out for- wealth and recognition- but has no intention of stopping, regardless of what difficulties come his way. Recently there have been more, quite unexpected obstacles. For one, he is not happy about his daughter's defection to Ark Industries. Apparently, someone unhappy with John's work with Dominion, which often resulted in layoffs and cost-cutting, had attacked Fallon one night. That near-death experience led to Fallon quitting her marketing job with Dominion and taking her talents elsewhere. Of course, John hid his disappointment well, but told Fallon in no uncertain terms that she was risking her sizable inheritance by going against his wishes.
He also kept his feelings about his wife's affairs to himself. He could not tell exactly what was going on or how long it had been going on, but he knew Nadine was lying to him about something, and since the couple was not very close anyway, his natural assumption was "cheating." His discovery of her lies came a short while after he realized he was a Special with the ability to detect other specials. He also knows that Fallon is going to manifest an ability soon. While he could easily tell Fallon what he knows, he isn't going to risk exposing his own ability over it. Especially not after her betrayal of Dominion.
