Nadine Daugherty
Full Name: Nadine Francette Daugherty
Age: 49
Civilian or Special: Special
Currently Located: New York
Affiliated with: Villain
Celebrity Claim: Edelstein, Lisa
Relation to You: Mother
Appearance: Nadine's most unusual feature is the color of her eyes. Her irises are a bright greyish-blue that contrasts with the darkness of her black hair, which falls to about the middle of her back. She has a long, narrow face with high cheekbones, and her lips are full. She usually wears makeup, but is generally considered still beautiful without it. Her small chest and wide hips give her an hourglass-shaped figure, and she stands just above average height. She loves designer brands and wears the nicest clothes wherever she goes, even if she is only taking a short trip to the local grocery store.
Personality: Among strangers, Nadine is somewhat friendly, though in a cool sort of manner. She is seldom rude, but not entirely approachable either. She is level-headed, hardworking, intelligent, and confident, and loves solving puzzles. When she is around people she knows well, Nadine becomes more comfortable and is more outgoing. No one would describe her as "open" or "trusting," but she does allow a few people to get close to her, and she is a dependable and helpful friend. Her family comes second to her work, but she does care about her husband and daughter. She can be selfish and indifferent, but she usually hides it well.
Deception: Nadine has the ability to completely fool anyone into believing anything she wishes them to believe. This ability allows her to appear perfectly truthful when she is lying; even a polygraph- or a telepath- would not be able to tell the difference. The ability temporarily alters the mental processes of both Nadine and her subjects, which lets her maintain completely normal composure- no faster heartbeat, darting eyes, or other tells- and also blocks others from picking up on clues that might give her away. Whatever she says will be taken as the truth. Nadine could tell a person that an apple is purple, while showing the person a red apple, and the person would believe that the apple is purple. She could do this to an entire room of people, and (except for the sorts of individuals listed below) not one would doubt her.
There are a few individuals on which Nadine's ability may not work. Specials with abilities that prevent their minds from being manipulated will either know that they are being deceived somehow or be able to see through the lie completely. Additionally, this ability may not work on people with unusually complex mental processes (the sort that even a mental manipulator would not want to navigate). This ability can be negated just like any other. Nadine must be close enough to her subjects to be seen or heard; however, the ability will work through amplification such as a loudspeaker.
Nadine had the good fortune to be born into a fabulously wealthy family. The Abneys, who resided in New Rochelle, New York, had held positions of power and influence in the region for several generations, and had run successful businesses that, while not always beneficial to the community, had made them absurd amounts of money. This money had been saved and invested, and the Abneys were able to live the sort of lifestyle most Americans only experience vicariously through celebrities.
The family was very traditional, and its women were expected to become perfect wives and homemakers and support their future husbands, who of course would all be wealthy and similarly minded. Nadine was raised in this manner, and as a result, learned more about etiquette and raising a family than she did about regular school subjects. Her schoolwork was never a priority for her family. this bothered Nadine. She had a natural affinity for learning, and she wanted to go to college and get an important job, not stay home and take care of babies (which is how she perceived stay-at-home mothers). She pushed herself to do well in school and go to college; a bit begrudgingly, her family paid her tuition and expenses.
Nadine earned a medical degree and became an anesthesiologist. It took her years to meet all the requirements, but she found all the studying and the work incredibly satisfying. Her studies and her work were her top priority. Fortunately, John Daugherty had the same mindset. they dated for a short while, then married, mostly for reasons that had more to do with compatibility and the wishes of their families than romance. The Daughertys liked Nadine's work ethic and welcomed her into their family; the Abneys, however, did not warm to John so easily. The Daughertys were only moderately wealthy; not until John ascended to the top of a successful airline did the Daugherty name carry any social weight. Years passed before Nadine's parents fully accepted John as her husband.
When Fallon was born, Nadine took a little time off to care for the baby, then went back to work, leaving the child to be taken care of by her family's staff. Both Nadine and John formed a habit of showing Fallon their love materially- by buying her everything she wanted and more and throwing parties whenever she wanted. They also enrolled her in a few extracurricular activities, but sheltered her too much, which left her with few friends and a slightly warped sense of the outside world. Once she became a teenager, they allowed Fallon more freedom, essentially letting her do as she pleased while they focused on their careers.
Meanwhile, Nadine had grown bored of John and the family life. She had numerous affairs with coworkers, patients, and other men she met. Fortunately, she was an excellent liar- or so she thought. It did not occur to her that she had a special ability until after April Fourth, 2010. She cannot pinpoint exactly when she manifested that ability- she might have been a child or it might have been the year before- but she quickly realized how useful it was, and quickly began to perfect it.
Nadine believes she is the only special in her family. She is partly right- Fallon has not yet manifested. However, she has yet to realize that her husband has powers as well. Once she does, there is sure to be considerable fallout for both of them, as well as for Fallon.
