Katie Cho
Full Name: Katherine "Katie" Cho (aka "Korea")
Age: 31
Civilian or Special: Special
Currently Located: Las Vegas
Affiliated with: Villain
Celebrity Claim: Park, Grace
Relation to You: Childhood acquaintance and current employee
Appearance: Generally, Katie is of average height and weight, but she sometimes uses heels to make herself appear taller or purposely gains or loses weight to change her appearance. Her hair is usually kept long and dark brown or black, but this is often changed as well.
Her facial features are, naturally, more difficult to manipulate. She has almond-shaped eyes which are sometimes obscured or accentuated by eyeshadow and eyeliner, a narrow nose, and small but full lips. She has learned to use makeup to bring out or hide her cheekbones and other aspects of her facial structure, allowing her to take on subtly different appearances at will.
Personally, she prefers wearing comfortable but stylish clothes, but when she is on the job, she wears whatever is most suitable for the job. Her figure allows her to make just about any outfit appealing.
Personality: Katie's personality is just as variable as her appearance. When she behaves as her normal self, she is laid-back and pleasant. While on the job, however, she acts far less civil, choosing instead to project an air of toughness and severity. When her work requires her to play different parts, she alters her personality to match her cover, which could be anything from that of a cheerful preppy chick to a seductive stripper. She has become very good at acting in this manner; at times, she becomes so absorbed in it that her original personality becomes muddled with the temporary one.
Abilities:
Ability Detection: This ability allows Katie to sense the presence of specials within her vicinity. The range of this ability is usually a radius of one hundred feet from wherever Katie is standing, and is effective through most walls unless they are at the perimeter of her range.
When Katie first manifested, this ability was completely passive, but since then, she has learned to switch it on and off at her will, and to tell the difference among types of abilities. Her ability is purely psionic; when it is activated, she experiences premonition-like feelings toward individuals with abilities. The feeling is slightly different for each sort of ability, allowing Katie to guess what sort of ability the person has. She can also gauge how powerful the ability is, whether the person has it under control, and whether the person is getting ready to use the ability. However, she cannot tell how the ability works or, in some cases with complicated powers, what exactly it does.
Ability Negation: In addition to detecting abilities, Katie can keep the abilities of others from being used. She uses psionic signals to interfere with the subjects' connection to their abilities. This can work on anywhere between one and roughly seventy people at once, though the more people she tries to negate at once, the less effective the negation is. In such cases, instead of having absolutely no access to their abilities, the subjects may only have limited use of their abilities.
Skills:
Katie is a fairly accurate shooter. She picked up this skill while involved in the South Atlanta criminal underground and honed them as a private investigator. She is best at shooting at close range, but can handle any situation comparatively well.
Limits:
Katie's abilities are purely defensive. She cannot control the abilities of others other than temporarily negating them. As mentioned above, she does have physical limits as well, those limits being the one hundred feet and the seventy people. Beyond these limits, her ability is useless, and attempting to strain herself could have an adverse effect on her brain.
Katie was born and raised in Acacia, Georgia, a suburban city just south of Atlanta. Her parents, both Korean immigrants, had been considerably well-off in their lives in Seoul, but, upon moving to America, they found themselves near the bottom of society. This resulted in them settling in a low-income area, despite its troubled public school system and its high crime rate.
Still, Katie managed to stay out of trouble and earn very good grades in her early years. Her childhood was fairly uneventful; her parents made enough money in their respective jobs that they were able to provide her with a comfortable life. As a result, Katie's classmates sometimes became jealous of her, especially as they all grew older, but she did make several friends, one of which was Camarain "Kanga" Walker.
In high school, Katie began to hang out with Camarain's friends more often. They mostly spent time at the mall or the park, but after a while, Camarain began to allow Katie to come along on some less straightforward trips. They usually took place at night, and items were exchanged, usually money and small packages. Katie found this a bit strange, and was aware of the area's rampant crime, but by the time she let herself make the connection, she had already assimilated into Camarain's undercover world.
Katie never became directly involved with the drug trade, as she found it repulsive. But, after inadvertently being involved in a shootout initiated by a rival gang, she decided that she would probably do well to pick up some self-defense skills. It was Camarain who got Katie her first gun and taught her to use it; Camarain herself had been trained by Rayleigh Johessman.
Partly out of concern for her friend's safety and partly because she liked the feeling of being able to handle a weapon, Katie began acting as an unofficial bodyguard for Camarain when she went out on "jobs." They were graduating from high school by this time. Katie enrolled at Emory University, mostly because her parents wanted her to, but ended up dropping out mid-year when she fell sick, complaining of headaches, dizziness, and general discomfort. No doctors were able to diagnose her; it was a completely unusual case, at least for their area.
As it turned out, Katie was simply in the middle of manifesting. She was completely unaware of this until she was quite suddenly approached by the Johessmans. Out of concern, Camarain had mentioned Katie's illness to her "boss," Rayleigh. As she was a special herself, with a mind-based ability, she correctly guessed that Katie was developing something of her own, something that could prove to be useful.
Again, Rayleigh was right. Thanks to her abilities, Katie quickly rose to the higher echelons of not only the gang but of the Johessmans' entire labyrinth of operations. The Johessmans helped her gain control of her powers, and also provided her with actual work, guarding their children as they took over part of the family business. She got to know Dakari especially well, as Dakari one of was the most troublesome of the Johessman seven. She was the first to take over the running of the gang from her mother, and especially needed the protection of a negator.
Meanwhile, Katie earned a degree in criminal justice from a community college and found legitimate work as a private investigator. After graduating from high school herself, Dakari left Atlanta, first to attend college and law school in New York , and then to run the Hotel Angelis in Las Vegas. They fell out of touch, though Katie continued to do a few investigative jobs for the Johessmans.
Years passed. Then, in June 2010, Katie received an unexpected call from Dakari. It was not entirely out of the blue; Katie had already heard that Shawn Johessman had been shot and nearly killed, and could guess what Dakari wanted. After negotiating a bit, Katie found herself back in the employ of the Johessman family. Specifically, she would serve as a bodyguard for Shawn and Rayleigh, but Katie knew the family well enough to understand without its being stated that she would be bouncing around quite a bit. Not only would the family make use of her negating skills, but they would make use of her background as an investigator as well. Besides, as concerned as Dakari was for the safety of her parents, Katie could guess that Dakari's parents were at least equally concerned about the hell Dakari would unleash, and the trouble she would get into, if she were left to her own devices.
