Hold me up
til the world wakes up
And grab my hand darling
Let your heroes divide
And my luxury is your patience
There’s a change coming soon
-Parabelle, When the World Wakes Up”
There was hardly a how or why, and there was hardly any reason to ask. Somehow, Christian had wound up in a family much closer than the one he had been born into. An unconventional one - filled with scientists and lawyers and lofty goals - but a family all the same, one he seemed to fit into perfectly now. He had started as a business associate, then an acquaintance, and, some time after that, a friend. Now he was surrounded by people who deeply cared about his well-being, and while friendship certainly held that aspect, this went beyond that. This went beyond anything Christian could have expected.
The rest of the group filed into the room en masse, and it was then that Maurelle took her leave. Christian would have liked for her to stay, but with the growing number of people in the room, he hardly expected her to do so. “Merci beaucoup, ma chérie,” he said softly as she began to leave, clearly enough for her to leave but a little harder to hear for the others.
Alain left as well, on Christian’s orders. Clearly there were fires that already needed putting out. If the government thought they could explain away the near-bombing of DC, they would have to think again. Surely they did not want any more rioting; being forthright was the natural step this time. But lessons, he was learning, were easy to teach, but hard to get through. Something like leading a horse to water.
Gabriel smiled as Lucius replied to his comment. Unfortunately, he doubted Jung would be letting Christian go anytime soon, not with the state of his ability. Given Jung’s premise, they would try to either de-toxify him or help him learn to live with it. He knew Jung’s psych wing could hold him for several days, with his consent or not. It was for his safety, and Gabriel understood that, but the man’s therapy was work, and it did take a friend to see that.
It did turn out that Dakari was there, which Christian was glad for. He wanted to thank everyone for having come to see him."Thank you all,” he said with a soft smile. "I never thought I’d bond so closely with anyone, yet here we are." He chuckled. “‘Picturesque,’ yes.”
Of course, the suggestion of champagne was met with immediate approval. “I think we are all in agreement on that,” Christian said. “Who here has a bottle on hand?”
“Oh, no you don’t,” Crystalynn said from the doorway, her head poking in. “I let you get away with breakfast, but if you want to drink, you’d better pretend that IV is bubbly.”
